RIVERSIDE, Iowa – The Coastal Carolina University men’s golf team shot the second-best round of the day and moved up to spots to fourth after the second round of the inaugural Golfweek Conference Challenge, Aug. 31. The three-day, 54-hole tournament, being hosted by Golfweek with assistance from the University of Iowa, is being played at the Blue Top Ridge Course (Par 72 - 7,505 yards) in Riverside, Iowa.
The inaugural events pits 15 of the 2009 conference team champions from across the nation. The Chanticleers improved on their opening round 292 by eight shots to shoot a 4-under 284 and are at even-par 576 through 36 holes. Iowa leads the team race at 8-under 568 after shooting an 8-under 280 in the second round, the best score of the day. Florida State is in second at 4-under 572 with first-round leader Baylor at 1-under 575.
Continuing to build on his solid summer, senior Sam Lyons again led the Coastal Carolina contingent by shooting his second under-par round of the event, improving to a 3-under 69 on the second 18 and is currently tied for fifth at 4-under 140. Redshirt sophomore Drew Ernst also fired a 3-under 69 in the second round and moved up to a tie for 13th at even-par 144. Sophomore Charlie Winegardner posted an even-par 72 on Monday and is tied for 18th at 1-over 145, with senior Dan Obremski next for Coastal Carolina at 3-over 147, good for a tie for 26th. Redshirt freshman Daily Young rounds out Coastal with a 9-over 153, tying him for 60th. Iowa's Brad Hopfinger is the 36-hole leader at 7-under 137, two shots ahead of a trio of golfers.
The final round will be a shotgun start at 9 a.m. on Tue., Sept. 1. The Chanticleers will go of with Vanderbilt and Middle Tennessee State in their last round of the event.
