RADFORD, Va. - The Coastal Carolina men's golf team carded an 11-over par 299 and sits in fifth place after the first round of the NCAA East-Virginia Tech Regional, played at the 7,685-yard, par 72 Pete Dye Course of Virginia Tech.

Individually for the Chanticleers, two-time All-Big South honoree Sebastian Soderberg is tied for eighth, turning in a one-over par 73.

Georgia Tech leads the the 13-team field, shooting a one-over 289 Thursday. Duke is second (295) while Kent State and Oklahoma are tied for third, each turning in an eight-over par 296. On the Chanticleers heels is host Virginia Tech, who shot 300.

"In a three round tournament you can not win it on the first day, but you still have to do well to get yourself into contention for that third day," said Director of Golf Allen Terrell. "We played solid and made a lot of good decisions. We did have one rough stretch, but we settled down and finished strong. We came out and got confidence early, playing well on our fourst seven hole. However, holes 17 and 18, which were our eighth and ninth holes, are the toughest holes on the course.

"We did what we talked about going in and that was being discipline. When we did get into trouble, we played the conservative shot and limited any damage. While we may have made a bogey, in the same situations earlier this year we would have taken a double or triple bogey."

While the top five teams from the NCAA East-Virginia Tech Regional advance to the NCAA Championships, coach Terrell is not complacent.

"We are three shots behind third and four shots behnid second, but right now our goal is be the leader and do to that, right now, we have beat Georgia Tech."

Despite 17 being one of the toughest holes on the course, Soderberg birdied the par 3. He also birdies his third hole, hole 12, to make the turn at one under. The sophomore then played his final nine hole at two-over par to his first round 73. Soderberg, Drew Ernst and Roberto Ballesteros each finished the day with no score worse than bogey. Ballesteros and Drew Ernst are tied for 27th individually, each carding a three-over par 75. Ballesteros had 15 pars, one birdie and four bogeys. Ernst had two birdies and five bogeys to go along with his 11 pars. Tripp McAllister had one tough hole, taking a double-bogey six on his 10th hole, hole #1. The redshirt junior finished wht a four-over 76 and is tied for 36th. Charlie Winegardner rounded out Coastal's day with an eight-over par 80 to tie for 64th.

The teams will play 18 holes Friday and a final 18 holes Saturday. Coastal Carolina will tee off Friday at 8:10, starting on hole #1.
