BATON ROUGE, La - The Coastal Carolina men's golf team carded a 14-over par 302 and finished the first round in sixth place at the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional, played on the campus of Louisiana State at the par 72, 7,436-yard University Club.
Coastal, ranked 50th nationally, got three birdies from sophomore Andrew Dorn over his last four holes as he, Sebastian Soderberg and Peter Valasek each carded a 3-over par 75 as each are tied for 20th. The Chants were in the bottom third late in the day, while playing partners South Alabama and Tennessee were among the top third. However, as the day came to a close, #47 South Alabama finished tied for second with an 8-over 296 while #38 Tennessee is fifth, two strokes ahead of CCU with a 12-over 300.
Florida leads the 13th-team field with a 2-under 286. The Gators, ranked 10th, lead top seed and second-ranked Alabama (296), South Alabama, #26 Houston (300) and Tennessee. Coastal is one spot below Saturday's cut line as the top five teams advance to the NCAA Championships.
Soderberg and Valasek each had a consistent first round. Soderberg carded 11 pars and posted birdies on holes 6 and 11 for his 75. Valasek was five-over par thanks to a double bogey on the ninth hole, but the sophomore birdied the 10th and 15th holes with seven pars on the back nine for his 75. Dorn got off to a tough start with a pair of double bogeys. He stood at 6-over par after a bogey on the 14th hole. The sophomore rallied to birdie the par 4 15th, the par 5 17th and par 5 18th for his 75.
The Chants will begin round two starting at 8:20 am (CT).
