Men's Golf in 5th After Rd 1 at Sun Belt Championships
MIRAMAR BEACH, Fla. - The Coastal Carolina men's golf team posted a 6-over par 290 and stands in fifth place after the first round at the 2017 Sun Belt Championship played at the par 71, 6,806-yard Sandestin Raven Course.
Due to inclement weather, the first round was interrupted. The second round began Sunday (with Coastal off to a 3-under start) and will conclude Monday. After the Championship's 54 holes of stroke play are completed Monday, the top four teams will continue playing Tuesday in a semifinal match play round in the morning, followed by the championship round of match play Tuesday afternoon.
Georgia State leads the 12-team field after shooting a 6-under par 278, followed by Troy (284), Georgia Southern (285) and South Alabama (288). Steven Fisk (Georgia Southern) is the individual leader through 18 holes with a 5-under par 66.
Sophomore Luis Ruiz led the Chanticleers through 18 holes as he shot an even par to stand in a tie for eighth. He carded 14 pars with a birdie and bogey on both the front and back nines. He is even pa to start the second round with six pars.
Thadd Obecny II is one stroke behind Ruiz and is tied for 14th with a 1-over 72. He bogeyed his second hole before carding birdies on his fourth and sixth holes. However, he dropped shots on his ninth and 13th holes before reeling off five pars to end his opening round. Obecny is even par to start the second round with a birdie and a bogey through three holes.
Ryan Carpenter is tied for 23rd. He had CCU's most consistent round as he had 16 pars -- including 12 straight to end his round -- with two bogeys to post a 2-over par 73. Carpenter played nine holes in the second round and had four bogeys, but had an eagle on the par-5, 17th. Olle Widegren had a tough start as he had a double bogey on his opening hole, followed by a bogey. However, he rallied to shoot even par, thanks to two bogeys and two birdies, to shoot a 3-over 74 to tie for 29th. The senior is 2-under par after three holes in the second round with two birdies and a par.
Alfredo Ruiz is tied for 46th after shooting an opening-round 77. Through six holes of his round two, he is 1-under par.
