NINETY SIX - After a two year hiatus, the Coastal Carolina men's golf team regained its spot at the top of the Big South, winning the 2013 Championship at the par 72, 7,120-yard Patriot Club at Grand Harbor with a score of 881 (296-289-296). Also senior Sebastian Soderberg, who was individual runner-up, was named the 2013 Big South Golfer of the Year, named All-Big South for the fourth time, earned All-Championship Team honors and, for the third straight year, was named Academic All-Big South.

Andrew Dorn was also named All-Big South and All-Championship team.

This marks the 14th Big South team championship for the Chanticleers and the 13th over the last 17 years. Soderberg joins Brad Hastings (1997-2000) and Dustin Johnson (2004-07) as the only Chanticleers to earn All-Big South four times - and just the eighth player in Big South history to accomplish the feat. Soderberg joins Zack Byrd as the only Chanticleer to be a three-time Academic All-Big South honoree.

The leader through two rounds, Coastal Carolina led comfortably most of the final round, but defending champion Liberty made a late charge behind individual medalist Mathieu Fenasse (75-70-66=211), who carded a 6-under 66 with four birdies on the back nine. In fact three Flames birdies the 18th hole to put the pressure on, but Dorn carded three birdies on the back nine and Soderberg played the back nine at even par to give the Chanticleers a two-stroke win.

Soderberg, who finished among the top 10 at the Big South Championships in all four years of his career, placed second and he has placed among the top 10 in each of his last seven events, including three runners-up and an individual medalist at the Insperity Augusta State. Soderberg was second after the first round - shooting 71, moved into the lead after day two - shooting 73, finished strong with a 2-under 70 for a 54-score of 2-under 214. Soderberg started with a bogey, but posted red numbers on holes two, five and seven to make the turn at 2-under. He added a birdie on the par 4, 12th and held a one stroke lead. Soderberg would bogey the par 3, 15th to settle for his round of 70.

Dorn, who earns his first All-Big South honor after making his first appearance at the Big South Championship, tied for fourth with rounds of 75-73-73 for a total of 5-over 221. The sophomore had two birdies and two bogeys on the front nine, but a double bogey on the par 4, third hole put him at 2-over at the turn. Dorn would bogey the 10th but rallied with birdies on the 14th and 15th holes, which went a long way to insuring the team title. He would bogey the 17th, but finished his championship with a birdie on the par 5, 18th for his round of 73.

Ben Wheeler, the 2012 Big South Freshman of the Year, just missed out on All-Big South honors as he tied for seventh (73-75-75=223). The sophomore finished 18th at last year's conference championship despite shooting three strokes better then. Wheeler was on pace to shoot even par, but a double bogey on the 16th, which played one of the top three hardest holes in round one and three, and a bogey on the 18th led to his final round 75.

Roberto Ballesteros, who moved Coastal into first after 36 holes with a 4-under 68 Monday, fired a final round 78 to tie for 17th. Peter Valasek was on pace for a solid final round, but struggled over the final three holes to turn in a 7-over 79. The sophomore tied for 31st with 54-hole total of 232 (77-76-79).
