NINETY SIX - The Coastal Carolina men's golf team shot a second-round 303 Tuesday and its two-day total of 588 is good for second place at the 2014 Big South Championships, played at the Patriot Club at Grand Harbor (par 72, 7,120 yards).
The team and individual champion will be decided on Wednesday with 18 final holes.
Liberty, ranked 35th nationally, moved from fourth after round one into the lead after shooting a 5-over par 293 Tuesday. The Flames have a two-day total of 583 (290-293) and lead the Chanticleers by five strokes. Coastal leads third-place Charleston Southern (286-303=589) by one stroke. The top five is rounded out by Radford (292-303=595) and Presbyterian (294-302=596).
Chanticleer junior Ben Wheeler, who was tied for second after day one, shot an even par round of 72 Tuesday and stands in third place. His two round total of 2-under par 142 (70-72=142) is three strokes behind leader David Denlinger of Charleston Southern (66-73=139).
Wheeler was 1-under par through six holes Tuesday before he suffered three straight bogeys to stand at 2-over at the turn. He rallied to birdie holes 12 and 17 with seven pars to finish at even par.
Roberto Ballesteros and Andrew Dorn are tied for 12th. Ballesteros and Dorn have a 36-hole total of 5-over par 149. Ballesteros posted his lone birdie of the day on his final hole to card a second-round 77. Dorn struggled on the front nine, but posted four birdies on his inward nine, including holes 17 and 18, to shoot 78.
Freshman Olle Widegren moved up one spot to 30th and has a two-day total of 153 (77-76). He, like Dorn, had four birdies on the day en route to his 4-over 76 Tuesday. Peter Valasek is tied for 39th with a total of 157 (72-85).
