Nintey-Six - The Coastal Carolina men's golf team, who was in sixth after two round, turned in the low round of the day, an even-par 288, and finished tied for third at the 2011 Big South Championships with a three-day score of 888, played at The Patriot Club's Grand Harbor Course (par 72, 7,113 yards).
Coastal had its streak of seven straight Big South titles snapped, which is a league record, with Liberty the 2011 championship with a 54-hole score of 856. Coastal Carolina and Winthrop tied for third, one stroke behind runner-up Gardner-Webb (887).
Liberty also had the individual medalist honors as Preston Dembowiak shot a seven-under par 209. He defeated teammates Max McKay (213) and Robert Karlsson (214).
Leading Coastal's charge on Wednesday was 2011 All-Big South selection Sebastian Soderberg. The sophomore bounced backed from an 81 Tuesday to card a career-low round of four-under par 68. He finished seventh overall with a three-round score of 220. Soderberg was three under at the turn, getting birdies on holes 6, 8 and 9. He fell to two-under after going bogey-par-birdie-par-bogey on holes 11-15. However, he capped the championship with birdies on 17 and 18 for his
Also playing well Wednesday was junior Drew Ernst, who fired a one-under par 71 to stand as his best 18-holes at the Big South Championship. Ernst started slow with a double bogey on hole 2, but reeled off five pars and two birdies to get back to even par on the front nine. Ernst would birdie holes 12 and 13, but bogey holes 15 and 17 before posting a birdie on the par-five 18th to his one-under round. Overall, Ernst tied for 18th with a 54-hole score of 225.
Roberto Ballesteros, playing in his first Big South Championship, finished a season-best 11th (tied) with a three-round score of 223. The freshman was the most steady player for the Chants with rounds of 73-75-75. Ballesteros had 11 pars, with three bogeys and a birdie, through 15 holes before a double bogey on the par-4 16th. He bounced back to finish par-birdie for his three-over 75.
Redshirt junior Tripp McAllister had to overcome 78 on day one and finished with a pair of 74's for his three-day score of 226 to tie for 20th. Charlie Winegardner finished 33rd with total of 232 (79-75-78).
Coastal Carolina will now await to find out if the Chants will make an eighth-straight appearance at an NCAA Regional.
