Coastal Men's Golf Tied for 3rd after 36 Holes at Gary Koch
GASTONIA, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina men's golf team carded an opening-round 295 before shooting a 2-under par 286 in round two Monday to stand in a tie for third with a 36-hole score of 581 at the Gary Koch Invitational, played at the par-72, 7.042-yard Gaston Country Club.
The 14-team field is led by co-host and 20th-ranked Auburn (282-277=559) and #43 North Carolina State (276-288=564) is second. Georgia Southern is tied with Coastal and the two are three shots ahead of #13 Virginia. Co-host and 37th-ranked Kentucky is in ninth.
Alfredo Ruiz was in 34th place after shooting 74 in the morning session. The senior rocketed 22 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 12th in the afternoon after turning in a 3-under par 69. The 69 is his fourth round in the 60's this season and the fifth of his career. In round two, he was 2-over through six holes before getting birdies on holes seven and nine to make the turn at even par. He opened the homeward nine with a bogey bit birdied four of his last six holes.
Olle Widegren matched Ruiz's performance as he also shot a 74-69 for a 36-hole score of 143 to stand in a tie for 12th. Widegren had five birdies -- four on the back nine -- with two bogeys as he recorded his first round in the 60's this season and the first since his sophomore season. The senior's two-round total of 143 ties his career best.
Luis Ruiz posted six birdies in the first round and finished with a 2-under par 70. He shot 75 in round two and is tied for 22nd with a score of 145. Freshman States Fort, playing as an individual, is tied for 41st with a 36-hole total of 149. He carded a 78 in the morning and, thanks to an eagle of the par-5 18th, shot a 1-under par 71 in the afternoon.
Ryan Carpenter and Thadd Obecny II are tied for 59th with a score of 152 through two rounds. Carpenter posted a 79 in round one and moved up 12 spots in round with a 1-over par 73. Obecny posted rounds of 77-75 for his 152.
The event will conclude with 18 final holes Tuesday.
