KANAPOLIS, N.C. - Coastal Carolina men's golf team closed the 2010-11 regular season with a sixth-place finish at the 13-team Irish Creek Collegiate, shooting a season low 870 for 54 holes and posting a season-best, seven-over par. The event was played at the 7,099-yard, par 71 The Club at Irish Creek.
Duke won the event with a three-round score of 844, followed by Wake Forest (851), Louisville (856), Middle Tennessee (865) and Kennesaw State (866).
On Sunday, the teams had to finish the second round as play was suspended Saturday due to inclement weather.
Tripp McAllister shot a season-low 213 (71-70-72) to finish 11th. The 11th-place finish was his best since placing sixth at the 2009 Big South Championship and his 213 was the redshirt junior's best 54-hole score since posting a 212 at the 2008 NCAA East Regional.
Freshman Roberto Ballesteros also posted season highs, shooting a five-over 218 (72-73-73) and placing a 26th. Sebastian Soderberg posted an eight-over 221 (71-74-76) and tying for 30th. The sophomore only had three bogeys Sunday, but had no birdies with a double bogey to record a 76.
Steve Delmar bounced back from a 81 in the opening round to shoot just three over par the final two rounds (72-73). The senior finished with a 54-hole score of 226 and he tied for 57th. Drew Ernst also rallied from a bad round. After shooting 86 in round two, the junior posted a 73 with five birdies and seven bogeys. Ernst finished 75th with a three-round score of 235.
Rounding out the CCU contingent was Charlie Winegardner, who was playing as an individual. The junior tied for 59th. He shot an even par 71 in round three and had a 54-hole score of 227 (79-77-71).
Coastal Carolina will return to action April 18-20 at the 2011 Big South Championships, played in Greenwood at the Patriot Golf Club. The Chants are the seven-time defending Big South champion.
