AUGUSTA, Ga. - In one of the best and deepest college events of the season, Coastal Carolina shot 297-295 over two rounds Saturday to stand in ninth place in the 15-team Insperity Augusta State Invitational, played at the par 72, 7,143-yard Forest Hills Golf Club.
The field includes 12 of the nation's top 50 teams - including #50 Coastal Carolina - as well as the #56 Augusta State, #96 Purdue and USC Aiken, ranked third in NCAA Division II. Host Augusta State leads the event with a two-round score of 576 (283-293), two strokes better than #6 Texas (296-282=578). rounding out the field is #17 Georgia (580), #29 Clemson (583), #35 South Carolina (583), #37 Virginia Tech (584), #25 Houston (588), #27 Tennessee (588), #50 Coastal Carolina (592), Purdue (593), #39 UCF (598), #40 Baylor (600), #24 Illinois (601) USC Aiken (603) and #16 SMU (604).
Three players are tied for first as Augusta State's Derek Chang and Robin Petersson, UCF's Greg Eason and South Carolina's Matthew NeSmith each carded a 36-hole score of 4-under 140.
Soderberg, who started on hole 13, began his day with a birdie on the 143-yard, par 3. He would birdie 15, bogey 16 and birdie 18 to make the turn at 2-under par. However, a double bogey on the third hole and bogeys on holes 4, 5 and 7 led to 3-over 75 in the first round. Standing in a tie for 37th to start the second round, senior would post bogey, birdie, bogey on holes 14-16. From that point, Soderberg reeled off nine pars and five birdies for a 4-under 68. The 68 is Soderberg's fifth round in the 60's this season and his four in his last five events.
Dorn had 11 pars and a birdie (one hole 16) through his first 12 holes in the first round before a double bogey on the par four eighth hole. The sophomore bounced back to card birdies on holes nine and 11. However, a bogey on the 12th hole forced Dorn to settle for an even par round of 72. In the second round, Dorn's round was a little more sporadic, but the result was similar. He had three bogeys, one double and four birdies for a 1-over par 73.
The Insperity Augusta State Invitational will conclude with 18 holes on Sunday.
