TALLAHASSE, Fla. - Coastal Carolina junior Ben Wheeler carded a first-round, 2-under par 70 and is tied for second after 18 holes at the Seminole Intercollegiate, played at the par-72, 7,172-yard Southwood Golf Course. The Chanticleers posted a first-round team score of 295 and is in sixth in the 13-team field.
Due to rain in the forecast on Sunday, the 54-hole event will conclude with 36 holes on Saturday.
Mercer, ranked 34th nationally, leads the field with an opening round 6-under par 282. James Madison is second (287), followed by #29 South Florida (289), #12 and host Florida State (290) and North Carolina (293).
Wheeler had two birdies and a bogey on each of his nine holes Friday to shoot par or better for the 10th time in 25 rounds this season.
Freshman Olle Widegren is tied for 24th after turning in a 2-over par 74 for the first round. He made the turn at 2-over and offset a bogey on the 14th hole with a birdie on the 15th to shoot even par on the inward nine.
Andrew Dorn, the reigning Big South Men's Golfer of the Week, is tied for 34th with a 3-over 75. Roberto Ballesteros, who had four birdies, is tied for 41st with an opening round 76 and Chris Williams is tied for 54th after shooting 78.
