GEORGETOWN - Coastal Carolina shot the fourth-lowest round Monday, a 292, to move up two spots and finish seventh (304-303-292=899) at the 11th annual General Jim Hackler Championship, played at the 7,189-yard, par-71 DeBordieu Club Mar. 11-12.
Freshman Peter Valasek, playing as an individual, carded a final round 78 to post his first career top 10 finish, tying for ninth. He posted rounds of 70-71-78 for a six-over score of 219. Valasek posted eight birdies over the 54 holes and was able to place among the top 10 thanks to playing the par 3's at even par, one of just nine to play the par 3's at par or better.
North Florida, ranked 114th, held on to its lead after two rounds to win the team title, shooting 872 (300-282-290). The Ospreys also claimed individual medalist honors as well as Sean Dale carded a 73 on Monday to hold on to his 36-hole lead to win by three strokes over a trio of golfers. He shot 69-70 on Sunday and finished with a three-round score of one-under 212.
East Carolina, ranked 41st, finished second with a 43-hole score of 874, followed by #9 Arkansas (878), #19 New Mexico (879), #24 Virginia (886) and #49 Augusta State (889).
Sebastian Soderberg carded an even par round of 72 and Charlie Winegardner shot 72. The duo finished the 54-hole event with 223 strokes to tie for 21st. Soderberg only had four pars over the first two rounds, but carded five birdies Monday, including three over the final seven holes, to move up 18 spots to 21st. Winegardner not only matched his first round one-over par 72 with a 72 Monday, but he did so in almost identical fashion, registering 13 pars, three bogeys and two birdies. Like Soderberg, he finished with a birdie on the par 5 ninth to move up 10 spots to 21st.
Ben Wheeler tied for 35th, shooting 77-74-75 for a 13-over 226. The freshman had a setback on his ninth hole, hitting his drive in the water for a double bogey. However, he rallied to birdie his 10th hole. After a bogey on his 13th hole, he closed his round like Soderberg and Winegardner with a birdie on his final hole. Andrew Dorn and Kevin Vanden Heuvel both tied for 51st. Dorn, who played his final 10 holes at one-under par (nine pars and a birdie), showed improvement each round, shooting 80-77-74 for a total of 18-over 231.
Playing as individuals, Easton Renwick tied for 63rd and Ty Wengel finished 81st.
Coastal Carolina will return to action later this week, playing in the three-day Furman Intercollegiate Mar 16-18.
