Coastal Men's Golf Finishes 8th at Palmetto Invitational
AIKEN - The Coastal Carolina men's golf team shot a final-round 303 Tuesday and finished with a 54-hole score of 872 to place eighth in the 18-team Cleveland Golf Palmetto Invitational, played at the par-70, 6,617-yard Palmetto Golf Club.
Clemson, ranked 16th nationally, shot a 9-over par 289 in the final round to move up one spot and win the event with a three-round total of 835. Third-ranked Virginia slipped one spot to finish runner-up (836), followed by #39 South Carolina (845), Augusta (848), East Carolina (857), Georgia Southern (860), #36 Liberty (871) and Coastal Carolina.
For the second event in a row, Thadd Obecny II was Coastal's top performer. He shot a final-round 76 and tied for 26th with a 54-hole total of 217 (73-68-76). Alfredo Ruiz posted a 54-hole score of 218 (72-71-75) to tie for 30th.
Ryan Carpenter led the Chants on Tuesday, shooting a 2-over 72 and moving up 18 spots in the standings. He was 2-over through 13 holes thanks to 12 pars and a double bogey on his fifth hole. He finished his round with two bogeys, two birdies and a par for his 72. Overall, the senior shot 220 (72-76-72) to tie for 36th.
Coastal Carolina will return to action Mar. 11-12 at The Dunes Club by hosting its own General Hackler Championship, presented by Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday. Always featuring some of the nation's top talent, this year's 15-team field includes nine teams currently among the nation's top 50, including #3 Virginia, #9 LSU, #12 Kent State, #15 Wake Forest, #35 North Florida, #38 Kentucky, #39 South Carolina, #45 NC State and #47 Iowa State. Also, LSU' Sam Burns is the third-rated golfer in the nation and Virginia's Jimmy Stanger is rated seventh.
