PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. - Coastal Carolina men's golf team fell from third to 10th, but Sebastian Soderberg is still in contention for individual medalist honors at the annual John Hayt Collegiate Invitational, played at the par-72, 6,977-yard Sawgrass Country Club.
Soderberg posted a 68 on day one and was tied for second after 18 holes. Monday, the junior carded a one-over par 73 and is in fourth place, two shots out of the lead with a 36-hole total of 141. TCU's Julien Brun leads the field with two-day total of 139.
Monday, Soderberg started well by getting birdies on two of his first four holes. However, he had three bogeys, a double bogey and a birdie to finish his first nine at two over par. On the inward nine, he had six pars and two birdies through eight holes before suffering a bogey on the par 5, 18th hole to finish at 73.
As a team, the Chants dropped seven spots to 10th after a round of 302 and a two-day total of 598. However, the team is just five shots from the top five and 10 shots off the lead. UCF, ranked 17th, kept its day one lead and has a 36-hole score of 588. The Knights are followed by #40 North Texas (591), #8 Arkansas (591), #38 Tennessee (591), #42 TCU (593), #13 North Florida (595) and #23 LSU (596).
Ben Wheeler is on pace to for his first collegiate to p20 finish. The freshman backed his 73 with a 75 Monday and his 26-hole total of four-over 148 puts him in a tie for 18th. Roberto Ballesteros improved by two strokes Monday, carding a four-over par round of 76. His two-day total of 154 puts him in a tie for 54th. Andrew Dorn and Charlie Winegardner each shot 78 Monday and stand in ties for 59th (155) and 71st (158) place, respectively.
The annual John Hayt Collegiate Invitational will conclude with 18 final holes on Tuesday.
