POINTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. - Playing in an NCAA Regional-type field, Coastal Carolina is in sixth place, shooting a one-under 287, after 18 holes Sunday at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational, played at the par-72 Sawgrass Country Club.
The three-day, 54-hole event features a 15-team field highlighted by nine teams ranked in Golfweek's Top 50 including four Top 15 squads (#3 Florida, #9 Auburn, #10 LSU, #14 Arkansas). Auburn and TCU are tied for first, each posting a six-under 282, followed by LSU (284), Arkansas (285) and Florida (286). Host and defending champion North Florida is tied for 10th, carding a 292.
Individually for the Chanticleers, Tripp McAllister, Roberto Ballesteros and Sebastian Soderberg each stand among the top 20. McAllister birdied the final hole to shoot a two-under par 70 to tie for 12th and is just three shots off the lead. Soderberg and Ballesteros are tied for 19th, each shooting 71. Soderberg recorded a team-best five birdies en route to his one-under 71. Ballesteros was three under par through 14 holes, but fell back after bogies on 15 and 17. Steve Delmar and Drew Ernst both had solid rounds going through 12 holes but struggled on their final seven as each to turned in a respectable 75 to tie for 39th.
The teams will play 18 holes Monday and another 18 Tuesday to determine the 2011 John Hayt Collegiate Champion.
