PONTE VERDE BEACH, Fla. - Coastal Carolina shot an opening round 293, which started Sunday and concluded Monday, and posted a second round 294 Monday afternoon and is tied for eighth with a 36-hole score of 587 in 15-team field John Hayt Collegiate Invitational, played at the par 72, 6,966-yard Sawgrass Country Club.
Second-ranked Oklahoma State leads the field with a 13-under par 563, followed by sixth-rankd UCF (566) and 13th-ranked UAB (570). Coastal is tied for eighth with Louisville and lead ranked teams #47 Tennessee (in 11th) and #27 Liberty (in 12th).
Chanticleer junior Ben Wheeler, who was tied for first after a first round 5-under par 67, is tied for fifth after a second round 74 and two round score of 141. He started the first round on the back nine and birdied three of his first four holes with a bogey and had a birdie on the par 4, 17th to make the turn at 3-under. He also surrounded a bogey with two birdies to start the front and bodied the par 5, 8th hole to finish with a 5-under 67 to mark Wheeler's fifth round in the 60's this season and ninth of 17 rounds this season at par or better.
In the afternoon session, Wheeler was even at the turn thanks to a bogey on the 2nd hole and birdie on the par 4, 9th. He finished the round with three bogeys and a birdie on the back nine.
Andrew Dornis tied for 27th with a two round score of 146 (74-72). Dorn had a consistent first round; reeling off 14 pars, but was 2-over par thanks to three bogeys and a birdie. He only had nine pars in the second round but had five birdies to turn in an even-par round of 72.
Roberto Ballesterosshrugged off a first round 77 to card a 73 in the second round and is tied for 47th with a 36-hole score of 150. The senior had five bogeys and four birdies in the afternoon session for his 1-over 73.
The annual John Hayt Collegiate will conclude Tuesday with 18 final holes of competition.
