PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. - Senior Sebastian Soderberg shot a 4-under par 68 in the first round of the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational and the 48th-ranked Coastal Carolina Chanticleers stand in fifth place in a 15-team field that features 11 to 50 programs.
The annual event is played at the par 72, 6,998-yard Sawgrass Country Club.
North Florida, ranked 25th, leads with a 12-under 276 and are followed by #11 Duke (282), #45 UCF (286), #12 LSU (290), #48 Coastal Carolina (291), #7 Florida (292) and #38 Tulsa (292). Also in the field is #14 Arkansas and #33 North Texas, each tied for ninth, #22 Tennessee (11th) and #44 Mississippi State (15th).
Soderberg only had one bogey in his round. The senior started on hole #10 and was 1-under after two holes. He also carded birdies on holes 16 and 18 to make the turn at 3-under. He suffered a bogey on the par 5 fourth hole but rallied to eagle the par 5 eighth for his 4-under round of 68.
Peter Valasek turned in an even par 72 and is tied for 25th. He too started on the 10th hole and was 1-under after nine holes, thanks to a bogey on 10 and birdies on holes 16 and 18. He carded a double bogey on hole number two and a bogey on the sixth hoke, but, like Soderberg, had an eagle on the par 5 eighth.
