Coastal Carolina Men's Golf Places 12th at Florida
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Coastal Carolina freshman Jonathan Goth-Rasmussen fired a career-best 66 and jumped 31 spots into a tie for 30th and help the Chanticleers move up one position to finish 12th at the SunTrust Gator Invitational, played at the par-70, 6,701-yard Mark Bostic Golf Course on the campus of the University of Florida.
Goth-Rasmussen shattered his career bests for single round (66), score in relation to par (-4), 54-hole score (213), 54-hole score in relation to par (+3) and best tournament finish (t-30th). In the final round Sunday, Goth-Rasmussen started with a bogey on the par-4, 10th hole. However, he responded with a birdie on the 11th hole and reeled off three more birdies to make the turn at 3-under par. He then carded pars on eight of his final nine hole with a birdie on his 16th hole -- the par-5, 7th hole -- for his 66. Overall, Goth-Rasmussen had rounds of 76-71-66 for his 213.
The Chanticleers posted a 7-over par 287 Sunday and finished with a 54-hole score of 861 (286-288-287) to finish 12th. Fifth-ranked Vanderbilt won with a score of 822, followed by host and #6 Florida (831), #25 South Florida (835), #32 North Florida (837).
"Jonathan played really well and kept allowed us to improve by one spot," said head coach Jim Garren. "All in all, this was not a bad week, despite the scores and finish. We were still able to beat some teams ranked ahead of us, namely a tough Lipscomb team. We will learn a lot from this tournament and have to get better production from the top of the lineup. I think we let the competition affect us some this weekend and that can't happen. I am looking forward to our next match at Aiken and see how we respond."
Morgan Deneen also moved up the individual leaderboard in the final round, jumping six spots after shooting a 3-over 73. He finished with a 54-hole score of 221 (72-72-73) and tied for 64th.
Coastal will return to action Mar. 5-6 at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Collegiate, played in Aiken at the Palmetto Golf Course.
