GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The Coastal Carolina men's golf team posted its best round of the 54-hole, SunTrust Gator Invitational - carding a 290, but remained in 13th place with a three-round score of 888 at the par 70, 6,701-yard Mark Bostic Golf Course.
The 14 team field featured eight teams ranked among the nation's top 46, including winner and #21 Arkansas (849). The Razorbacks were followed by #20 Florida State (855), #16 Vanderbilt (858), #5 UCF (863), #8 UAB (868) and #34 Mercer (868).
Ben Wheeler moved up 20 spots to tie for 30th after a final round 69. Overall, he carded a 10-over par 220 (78-73-69). Starting on the back nine, he bogeyed two of his first three holes, but had birdies on holes 18, four and seven for his 1-under round of 69 Sunday. In 15 rounds this season, Wheeler has now shot par or better eight times.
Andrew Dorn turned in his second consecutive round of 73 and finished tied for 42nd (76-73-73=222). The junior started with a par on the first hole, but settled for four straight bogeys on holes 2-5. However, he finished with 12 pars and a birdie on hole 17. Roberto Ballesteros also carded a final-round 73 and tied for 46th (74-76-73=223).
The Chanticleers will return to Florida Feb. 23-25 to play in the annual John Hayt Invitational, played at Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach.
