Charlie Winegardner enters his first season as a student assistant after a successful four-year career with the Chanticleers. The Lothian, Md., native earned All-Big South honors in 2010, was a 2012 GCAA Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar and was a three-time Big South Presidential Honor Roll honoree, posting at least a 3.0 GPA for the 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12 academic years.
Winegardner played in 32 career events and averaged 75.28 strokes over his 95 career rounds. He turned in 20 rounds of par or better with three career top 10 finishes and seven career top 20 finishes.
As a senior, he closed his career in impressive fashion, averageing 72.2 strokes over his final 13 rounds with eight rounds of par or better. For the year, he ranked second on the team with a 74.45 scoring average. He just missed a second all-conference honor, finishing ninth at the 2012 championships with rounds of 69-68-77 for a 2-under 214. As a junior, he posted a top 10 finish at the Cavalier Classic to help ensure the Chants' receive a bid to the NCAA Regional.
Winegardner represented Coastal at the 2010 and '11 NCAA Regionals and his eighth-place finish at the 2010 conference championship led to a team title. Coastal also won the Big South team title in 2009.
Prior to Coastal, Winegardner was a four-time MISAL Conference Most Valuable Player and named All-County each of his four seasons, including Player of the Year as a senior, while at the Calverton School. He finished third at the Maryland State Boys Championship, shooting scores of 67 and 73 in the tournament and, in the summer of 2007, won the Williamson Cup, shooting a four-under 140 in the event, and was runner-up in the Robert Riley Open. Winegardner was the Washington Metropolitan Junior Golfer of the Year in 2006 after winning titles at the Robert Riley Open, Bobby Gorin Championship and Titleist Golf Tournament at the University of Maryland Course.
