J.T. Clendenin, the 2007 Big South Freshman of the Year, was named Coastal Carolina assistant men's golf coach in December 2012.
Clendenin spent the previous year and a half (Aug. 2010-Dec. 2011) as an assistant coach for both the men's and women's programs at Shorter University. The women ended the season ranked No.1 and placed third at the NAIA National Championship - two strokes from first place. The men's program ended the 2010-11 season ranked ninth and placed 20th at the NAIA National Championship.
"In just a few years of experience, J.T. has already separated himself as one of the rising stars in the coaching profession," Terrell said. "He made a tremendous impact at his past programs as he has incredible leadership skills and work ethic. He embraces the challenge we have set for our program to compete and win nationally.
"J.T. will lead our recruiting efforts and his personality represents the players we are trying to attract," Terrell said. "He achieved a high level of success both academically and on the golf course. I look forward to working with J.T. as we take our recruiting efforts to an even higher level."
Clendenin posted a 74.28 career scoring average over 99 collegiate rounds, shooting in the 60's 10 times, having 27 rounds of par or better and finishing among the top 10 eight times.
As a senior with the Mocs, Clendenin played in all 12 events, including the NCAA Southwest Regional. During his sophomore season, Clendenin played in 11 events, including all eight spring tournaments. The Mocs won four of those eight events, including the 2008 Southern Conference championship, thanks to three top 10 finishes by Clendenin. One of those top 10's came at the SoCon Championship, where he placed seventh. He finished the season ranked 223rd in the nation in the GolfStat Index, posting a season scoring average of 73.26 over 31 rounds with 12 rounds carding par or better.
Clendenin began his collegiate career at Birmingham-Southern. He was a four-time Big South Golfer of the Week during the 2006-07 season and ranked as high as 191st on the GolfStat top 250. His freshman campaign included five top 10 finishes and six rounds in the 60's. Clendenin's top performance was winning the BSC Spring Invitational, where he carded a career-low 66 and finished with a score of nine-under par, 207.
In addition to collegiate results, Clendenin had two noteworthy performances during his off seasons. Prior to his senior year, he won the 2009 Signal Mountain Invitational by one stroke with an eight-under par 205, beating five-time champion Michael Morrison. The previous summer, Clendenin shot a two-under par 68 to qualify for the 2008 NGA Hooters Tour Classic at Kings Creek at Kings Creek Golf Club in Spring Hill, Tenn. Clendenin has played in six professional events - two on the Hooters Tour and four on the E Golf Tour.
