CONWAY - Of the 122 NCAA Division I FCS programs, only 24 are still playing as the first round of the national playoffs begin Saturday (Nov. 30). Luckily for those in the Conway area, fans can see #11 Coastal Carolina host #12 Bethune-Cookman, the two highest-ranked teams to be facing each other in the first round, at Brooks Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 pm.
In fact, there are just two other first-round games featuring two ranked opponents as #8 Northern Arizona is hosting #13 South Dakota State and #20 Jacksonville State is hosting #18 Samford. In addition to the two being nationally ranked, both Coastal Carolina and Bethune-Cookman were 10-2 this season and both were co-champions of their respective leagues.
Coastal enters with one of the nation's top offenses - ranking among the FCS top 10 in third down conversions, first downs, red zone offense, scoring, fewest tackles for loss allowed, total offense and rushing offense.
Bethune-Cookman enters with one of the nation's top defenses - ranking among the FCS top 10 in third down conversions, first downs, passes intercepted, rushing defense, scoring defense and total defense.
This will mark the second meeting between the two schools. Ironically, the Chanticleers and Wildcats squared off in the first round of last year's FCS playoffs with Coastal claiming a 24-14 decision in Daytona Beach, Fla.
