CONWAY, S.C. -- Coastal Carolina University's football program had four players named to the 2008 All-Big South Conference First Team, the league announced today (Nov. 25). The award winners were selected by the Conference’s head coaches and media panel.
Selected to the first team were senior offensive lineman Britt Leggett (Evergreen, N.C./West Columbus), junior defensive end Phillip Oboh (Greensboro, N.C./Dudley), senior linebacker D.J. Rice (Cooleemee, N.C./Davie County) and sophomore punter Ben Erdman (Cleveland, N.C./West Rowan). It was the second time that Leggett was honored on the league's first team, while Rice and Oboh were selected to the second team in 2007. This is the first postseason honor for Erdman.

Britt Leggett, Offensive Line, Sr.
Started all 11 games this year… Graded out as the Chanticleers’ top offensive lineman this year, despite having to play both tackle positions during the year due to injuries… A 2007 All-Big South selection on the offensive line, as well as a 2008 preseason All-Big South honoree…
Phillip Oboh, Defensive End, Jr.
Played in all 12 games, starting six… Was fourth on the team with 53 tackles, including 33 solos… Led the team with 10.0 tackles for 37 yards of loss (eighth in league) and with 5.0 sacks (fifth in Big South) for 31 yards…Also had one forced fumble and one blocked kick… Recorded at least four tackles in seven contests, including a season-high eight tackles, including 3.0 tackles for loss, one sack and one blocked kick at North Carolina A&T… Posted seven tackles with four solos against Liberty… Had six tackles against Stony Brook… Posted five tackles (all solos) with 2.0 sacks for 15 yards of loss at Presbyterian… Had five tackles each against Colgate and at Monmouth, with a forced fumble at Monmouth… Also had four tackles with three solos at Penn State…
D.J. Rice, Linebacker, Sr.
Started 10 of 12 games played… Led the Chants with 86 total tackles (ninth in league), including 34 solos… Also had 4.5 tackles for loss, 1.0 sacks, one INT, four hurries, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery… Had three games with 10 or mor tackles and 10 with at least five tackles… Posted 42 of his tackles in conference action… Posted a season-high 11 tackles at VMI and against Towson… Also had 10 tackles with five solos against Liberty… Had eight tackles, with six solos, one fumble recovery and one touchdown for 20-yard return in the win at Presbyterian… Also had eight tackles (five solos) in the victory at Gardner-Webb… Recorded nine tackles (season-high seven solos) with 1.0 tackles for loss in the win at Monmouth… Posted seven tackles against Stony Brook.
Ben Erdman, Punter, So.
Led the Big South Conference in punting, averaging 38.0 yards per punt, almost three yards better per game than his freshman year… Named Big South Special Teams Player of the Week for his effort in the win at Gardner-Webb, on a cold, windy day putting three of his punts inside the 20, including two inside the five, limiting GWU to one return opportunity (five yards) and averaging 40.3 yards per punt… Recorded a career-best 54 yard punt at Penn State as well as another 50-yard punt, averaging 43.0 yards on eight punts against the Nittany Lions… Averaged 40.7 yards on three punts at VMI, including one inside the 20 and a 50-yard boot… Finished the year with 13 punts inside the 20 and 10 fair catches… Had three 50+ yard punts on the season…
