Evan Rabon Earns Sun Belt Honor

Nov. 20, 2017

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Coastal Carolina junior Evan Rabon was named the Sun Belt Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for his effort in the Chanticleers’ 13-7 win at Idaho, the league announced today. It marks the second time this season Rabon has received the weekly honor.

He made all three of his placement kicks (2-for-2 field goals and 1-for-1 extra point), averaged 40 yards on his four punts and had two touchbacks on his four kickoffs.

With the score tied, Rabon drilled a 52-yard field goal with 31 seconds left in the second quarter to give Coastal a 10-7 lead at halftime. The boot tied his career long – matching his effort versus Western Illinois earlier this fall – and was one yard shy of the CCU record of 52, set by Alex Catron at Gardner-Webb in 2013.

Early in the fourth quarter, Rabon split the uprights from 34 yards out to put the Chanticleers up 13-7, which proved to be the final score. The successful field goal conversion was Rabon’s eighth consecutive make over six games, two shy of the CCU record for consecutive field goals made (set by Ryan Granger in 2015).

In addition to his scoring, Rabon had a good day punting as well.

He averaged 40 yards on his four punts and none of his punts were returned as two were fair catches and two were downed by CCU. Two of his punts pinned the Vandals inside their own 20, including his shortest punt of the game – a 30-yarder that was downed on the Idaho eight yard line.

For the season, Rabon is on pace to shatter the CCU single-season record for punting average, currently at 43.0 yards per punt. In fact, Rabon will be the first Chanticleer punter to average over 40 yards for a season as the current CCU record is 39.2 yards, set by Austin Cain in 2014. Also, Rabon is on pace to set the CCU career mark for punting average. Rabon’s current career average of 39.9 is over two yards better than the current mark, which he had entering the season at 37.81 yards through his first two seasons. Of his 131 career punts, CCU opponents have only returned 31 while 49 have been fair catches and 49 have pinned opponents inside their own 20. He only has five career touchbacks while recording 17 punts of at least 50 yards, including a CCU record 12 this season.

Rabon’s first Sun Belt Player of the Week honor came after his effort at Appalachian State. Osharmar Abercrombie is the only other Chanticleer to be a Sun Belt Player of the Week in the program’s inaugural season in the league as he earned Offensive honors the opening weekend.
