CONWAY - With Coastal Carolina receiving the Big South's automatic qualifier bid to the NCAA FCS Playoffs, the Department of Athletics will host a watch party this Sunday (Nov. 21) at Logan's Roadhouse at Coastal Grand Mall, home of the weekly Chanticleer Call-In. The official announcement will be made on ESPNU with the selection show starting at 10 am. The public is welcome to attend.
The Chanticleers, in their eighth season as a program, laid claim to its fourth Big South Championship - and first since 2006 - when Coastal Carolina defeated Charleston Southern, 70-3, in the regular-season finale coupled with a Liberty 54-28 win at home versus Stony Brook. Coastal Carolina, Liberty and Stony Brook all finished conference play with a 5-1 record. The tie-breaker for the Big South's automatic berth went to Coastal Carolina based on fewest points allowed in league play. In only giving up three points Saturday versus Charleston Southern, Coastal finished with 109 defensive points allowed, compared to 122 by Stony Brook and 138 by Liberty. (Stony Brook held a 38-point lead in points allowed prior to Saturday's game with Coastal allowing just three and Stony Brook giving up 54 to Liberty.)
Coastal Carolina will making its second NCAA FCS playoff appearance. The Chants made history receiving the first, and currently only, at-large berth to the playoffs in 2006, falling 45-28 to eventual national champion and top-ranked Appalachian State.
Coastal Carolina now makes Big South history once again, receiving the league's first ever automatic berth to the NCAA FCS playoffs.
