CONWAY - Coastal Carolina sophomore Quinn Backus has been named the Big South Defensive Player of the Week for a record fifth time, the league announced today, after a record-setting performance in the Chanticleers' 41-20 win over Charleston Southern to lock up Coastal's fifth Big South title and third NCAA Championship berth.

Coastal Carolina head coach Joe Moglia and "Voice of the Chanticleers" Matt Hogue will discuss Coastal winning the Big South Conference Championship this past weekend, Backus' performance and preview this Saturday's playoff game at Bethune-Cookman at tonight's (Monday, Nov. 19) Chanticleer Call-In. The show is broadcast live from 6-7 pm at Buffalo Wild Wings in Carolina Forest and can be heard locally on ESPN The Team (100.3 FM) as well as on the internet on GoCCUSports.com as part of the Chanticleer Sports Network. Fans can interact with Coach Moglia during the show or participate by calling 866-866-6562 or by emailing your questions to askthecoach@coastal.edu.

Backus becomes the first student-athlete in Big South history to win either offensive or defensive football player of the week honors five times in one season. (Coastal Carolina's Josh Hoke was a five-time Big South Special Teams Player of the Week honoree in 2005.) Over his 11 games, Backus is also a two-time National Defensive Player of the Week honoree.

This past Saturday, Backus may have saved his best for last as the Greenwood native tallied a career-high 16 tackles. He now has 123 tackles in 11 games this season, breaking the CCU single-season record of 116 stops set in a 12-game 2006 season by Jamar Leath. Backus added two tackles for loss, an interception and a forced fumble. The interception came on the first drive of the game and the forced fumble came on Charleston Southern's second drive.

Backus ranks 10th in the nation and second in the Big South in tackles this season. He is the only player in the Big South to rank among the league's top 10 in tackles (2nd, 123), sacks (ninth, 2.5), tackles for losses (fifth, 8.0), fumbles forced (first, 3/0.27 avg.), fumbles received (third, 2/0.18 avg.) and interceptions (fifth, 2).

Backus and the Chanticleers will play Bethune-Cookman in the first round of the FCS Playoffs on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 2 pm in Daytona Beach, Fla., at Municipal Stadium.
