CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Coastal Carolina defensive back Marcus Lott (Union, S.C.) has been named the Big South football New Balance Defensive Player of the Week, while Coastal Carolina punter Ben Erdman (Cleveland, N.C.) was named Special Teams Player of the Week for games played in week 11 of the 2008 season, it was announced today by the Conference office.

Lott recorded a career-high six tackles (including a personal-best three solos), along with his first collegiate interception and three pass break-ups in Coastal Carolina’s victory at Gardner-Webb. Making just his second career start due to injuries, Lott had one of the game’s crucial plays when he broke up the Bulldogs’ two-point conversion late in the fourth quarter to preserve the Chanticleers’ two-point lead and the win. His third quarter interception also ended a Gardner-Webb threat, as the Bulldogs were in Chanticleer territory when the pick occurred.

Erdman averaged 40.3 yards on seven punts for the Chanticleers, including three inside the 20-yard line and two inside the 5-yard line. Of his seven punts, only one was returnable and went for just five yards, and Gardner-Webb’s average start was its own 19-yard line. Erdman booted a long of 48 in the third quarter, in addition to punts of 45, 41 and 42 during the game.
