CONWAY - Thanks to a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown this past Saturday versus VMI, Coastal Carolina redshirt freshman Devin Brown was named the Big South Special Teams Player of the Week and the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) National Kick Returner of the Week.
Brown (Charleston, S.C./James Island Charter School) returned four kickoffs for 140 yards (35.0 average) against VMI, including a 95-yarder for a touchdown. Following a VMI field goal that made the score 38-27 midway through the third quarter, Brown returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a score - the longest scoring play in Coastal history. Brown is one of just 28 players in the FCS to return a kickoff for a touchdown this season season and his 140 kick return yards rank fourth on the CCU single-game list.
In addition to Brown being recognized, Michael Church was named Big South Offensive Player of the Week by College Sports Madness. Making his first collegiate start, the Kannapolis, N.C., native and A.L. Brown High product completed 12-of-15 passes for 164 yards with three touchdowns and zero interceptions. Church entered the game with zero pass attempts in five previous games and two rush attempts for minus eight yards. He completed his first seven passes over his first two drives. To open the game, he completed 4-of-4 passes for 48 yards, including a 17-yard TD pass to Niccolo Mastromatteo to give CCU an early 7-0 lead. On his second drive, Church completed 3-of-3 passes for 41 yards and CCU scored to lead 13-7. Up six points, 23-17, with 2:39 left in the first half, Church led CCU to a 4-play, 53-yard drive, going 3-for-3 on the drive with completions to Hazel (six yards), DeMario Bennett (seven yards) and Hazel for a 32-yard TD. To open the second half, Church connected with Hazel for a 12-yard score then hit Hazel on the ensuing play for a 2-point conversion.
