CCU vs Appalachian State
This will be the fourth meeting between Coastal and Appalachian State. The Mountaineers have won each of the previous three meetings, all of which have been played in Boone.
App State and Georgia Southern (who also owns a 3-0 advantage over CCU) are the only two Sun Belt schools Coastal has played prior to this season. All of those previous three meetings were while App, Georgia Southern and Coastal were members of the FCS.
The first meeting between Coastal was in 2005, the Chanticleers' third season of football. While Coastal lost that game 30-3 in week three of the season, it was one week after beating then #1 James Madison and the loss snapped a 10-game win streak by CCU. Coastal went on to win seven straight prior to being upset in the season finale.
The second meeting was in the first round of 2006 NCAA playoffs. Then #1 Appalachian State won 45-28, snapped an eight-game CCU winning streak and went on to win the national championship. The last time CCU and App met was 2012, the first year of the Joe Moglia era. After a 2-0 start that season, Coastal was handed a crushing 55-14 loss by then #16 App State and that loss would prove the be a turning point in the Moglia era.
While CCU lost the following week -- a 37-21 hard-fought defeat to then #11 Stony Brook-- and fall to 2-4, Coastal won its last six in 2012 before being beat in the second round of the NCAA playoffs. Overall after that 2-4 start in 2012:
- Coastal would go on to win 45 of its final 50 regular-season games versus FCS opponents through the end of 2016.
- Coastal would be be ranked #1 in the FCS 10 weeks and end its FCS run ranked among the top 25 for 59 consecutive weeks (final pol of 2012 through final poll of 2016).
- Reach the NCAA FCS playoffs four times --2012, `13, `14 and `15 (not eligible in `16).
Coastal Hoping to Follow App's Lead
Like Coastal Carolina this season, Appalachian State was also 1-5 to start its first season as a member of the Sun Belt in 2014. The Mountaineers won its final six games that season to finish 7-5 overall, while going 6-2 in the Sun Belt to finish third.
Since that 1-5 start, App has gone 27-5 overall and 20-2 in the league.
