CHARLOTTE, N.C. Coastal Carolina University football had three players earn Big South Conference Player of the Week for their respective areas, Oct. 18. Sophomore wide receiver Perry Parks (Rock Hill, S.C./Sumter) was named Offensive Player of the Week, sophomore punter Rob Williams (Lancaster, S.C./Lancaster) was named Special Teams Player of the Week, while freshman defensive back Marrio Norman (Greenwood, S.C./Greenwood) was named Freshman of the Week.
After suffering a season-ending injury in the second game last season, Parks has made himself known this season. He was the leading receiver in the win at VMI, Oct. 16, catching three passes for 52 yards and his first collegiate touchdown, which ended up being the game-winning score for CCU. Parks ranks second on the team with 11 catches for 152 yards and a touchdown.
Wililams was a key part of the win at VMI, as he averaged 36.3 yards per punt (season-best) on six punts and set a career best with a 48 yard kick in the contest. On a day with swirling winds, his 39-yard punt early in the fourth quarter was important, as it pinned VMI on its own 11-yard line, a possession that eventually led to CCU getting field position 0n VMI's 30 for the game-winning touchdown. VMI managed just one punt return for one yard on the day.
Norman has started all six games and had his best game when CCU needed it. The freshman defensive back recorded a career-best seven tackles including three solo and one tackle for loss. He also broke up two passes, both in the end zone to keep VMI from scoring on those possessions. He is now tied for fourth on the team with 26 tackles.
The Chanticleers (5-1, 1-0 Big South) continue Big South Conference play at home in a battle of the conference unbeatens, hosting rival Liberty (2-4, 1-0 Big South), Sat., Oct. 23. Kickoff at Brooks Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m., with just 600 tickets for sale remaining for the game.
