Football Has Three Earn Big South Weekly Honors

Thigpen, Simpson and Hoke earn honors for their play in win over Charleston (WV)

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Coastal Carolina University football had three players earn Big South Conference Player of the Week for their respective areas, Oct. 11. Sophomore quarterback Tyler Thigpen (Winnsboro, S.C./Fairfield Central) was named Offensive Player of the Week, sophomore Josh Hoke (Statesville, N.C./West Iredell) was named Special Teams Player of the Week, while freshman wide receiver Jerome Simpson (Reidsville, N.C./Reidsville) was named Freshman of the Week.

Thigpen won his first weekly award after putting together the best all-around game of his career in leading the Chanticleers to their second straight win and third consecutive victory at Brooks Stadium. He rushed for a career-high 83 yards on seven carries, including a 23-yard run and an 18-yard touchdown scamper. Thigpen was also 9-for-20 through the air for 200 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. The 200 passing yards are the second highest of his career, while the three touchdown passes are a career best and a school record. The 45-yard touchdown pass to Simpson also tied a school record for the longest pass play.

Hoke hit on all six PAT attempts for the Chanticleers and was 2-for-3 on field goals, hitting from 28 and 41 yards. His only miss was a 55-yard attempt. He is a perfect 22-for-22 on PATs and is 6-for-9 on field goal attempts this season, leading Coastal and the Big South with 40 points on the year. Hoke has also tied the school record of six field goals in a season, which he set last year. This was the second consecutive week and third time overall that Hoke has earned the honor.

Simpson continued his outstanding play, catching four passes for 108 yards and three touchdowns, tying the conference record for touchdown receptions in a game. His three scores are a school record, while his 108 yards receiving are just two yards off the CCU mark. He is now just the second player in league history to win the award three times.

The Chanticleers open Big South Conference play on the road at VMI (0-6), Sat., Oct. 16, as the two squads are the only two league teams in action this week. Kickoff at Alumni Memorial Field is set for 1 p.m.
