NEWBERRY, SC - In a battle of unbeatens, the visiting Coastal Carolina football squad lost a tough fought game to host Newberry, 21-7, Sept. 18. CCU drops to 2-1 on the year, while the Indians move to 3-0.
Newberry got on the board first with an eight-play, 60-yard drive, as quarterback Josh Stepp followed his line from a yard out to put the Indians up 7-0 with 1:41 to play in the first quarter. The drive was sparked by a 29-yard pass from Stepp to wide receiver Tymere Zimmerman.
Coastal struggled to mount a sustained drive, while Newberry had several more drives deep in Chanticleer territory. The Indians made another one late in the second but kicker Stephen Stellfox missed a 32-yard attempt wide left with just over two minutes to play in the half, getting CCU out of another jam and entering the intermission just trailing by seven.
Newberry got on the board again on its first drive of the second half, as running back Deshon Rodell busted through a hole for a 29-yard touchdown , capping an eight-play, 68-yard drive over 4:11 to put the Indians up 14-0.
Coastal forced a Newberry turnover midway through the quarter but couldn't advance the ball beyond Newberry's 40-yard line. The Chants got on the board with 7:13 to play in the game, as sophomore Aundres Perkins (Effingham, S.C./West Florence) plunged in on third down from four yards to cut the lead to 14-7. CCU's drive was the best of the game, going 87 yards on 14 plays over 5:56.
Stepp sealed the game with 2:02 to play on a 32-yard dash to the CCU one-yard line, ending the drive with a plunge by Gerard Jackson with 1:09 left in the game.
Coastal struggled offensively, being outgained by the Indians 438-197, and the Chants had just nine first downs. Sophomore Patrick Hall (Richmond, Va./Monacan) and Perkins each rushed for 49 yards, while sophomore Tyler Thigpen (Winnsboro, S.C./Fairfield Central) was limited to 5-for-20 passing for 33 yards and an interception. A redshirt sophomore transfer from Furman, Stepp rushed for 149 yards on 23 carries and a touchdown and was 12-for-19 for 151 yards.
Coastal returns home to the friendly confines of Brooks Stadium to host North Greenville, Sat., Sept. 25 at 7 p.m.
