Simpkins Named Big South Football Defensive Player of the Week
CHARLOTTE, NC- Coastal Carolina University linebacker Maurice Simpkins (Leesville, SC-Batesburg-Leesville) was named the Big South Conference's Football Defensive Player of the Week, Sept. 7.
Simpkins was one of the defensive stars for the Chanticleers in their inaugural-game victory
over Newberry. A transfer from Catawba,Simpkins posted a team-high 11 tackles, including five solo shots and 3.5 tackles for loss. He also had one fumble recovery on a muffed punt, which led to Coastals second touchdown of the game, and a pass breakup.
The Chants, who posted a thrilling 21-14 win in the final seconds last Saturday, will host Morehead State, Sat., Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. at Brooks Stadium. The Eagles, who were the Pioneer Football League (PFL) South Division champions last season, come in at 0-1 after losing their opener 12-0 to the defending PFL champion Dayton Flyers, Sept. 6.
