Mastromatteo was voted preseason All-Big South by the league's coaches both as a punt returner and wide receiver. He had a breakout season in 2012 as he ranked 13th nationally and first in the Big South in punt returns with an average of 11.36 yards per return. Mastromatteo is the Big South's all-time leader in punt returns (61) and punt return yards (538). Also, after catching just one pass for seven yards in his first two years combined, Mastromatteo hauled in 47 passes for 571 yards as a junior. His 47 receptions rank third on the CCU single-season list (behind Matt Hazel's and Jerome Simpson's 61), he tied a CCU single-game record with 10 receptions versus Eastern Kentucky and he owns the CCU record for longest pass play, scoring an 81-yard touchdown at Gardner-Webb.
Backus was previously named third team preseason All-American by The Sports Network and Big South Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. Backus is coming off a record-setting 2012 season, setting a CCU season record with 139 tackles and setting a Big South record by being the first player to be a five-time Big South Defensive Player of the Week honoree in one season. Backus was additionally a two-time National Defensive Player of the Week. He ended the season by being named the 2012 Big South Defensive Player of the Year and third team All-American by The Sports Network.
