CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina football team had its final two-a-day practice Monday, going once in full gear in the morning and once in the evening in helmets and shoulder pads.
The team will have one final morning practice Tuesday, going in full gear, before settling into its routine for the next four months as classes at Coastal Carolina University begin Wednesday forcing late afternoon sessions.
Along the lines of being routine, the team will have a scrimmage Wednesday (closed to the public), once again wearing game uniforms and keeping score to be as prepared as possible come Sept. 4 for the 2010 season opener at West Virginia.
The Mountaineers enter 2010 ranked 24th in the NCAA Division I FBS in the coaches poll and 26th in the media poll. Coming out Monday was the preseason Sports Network/Fathead.com FCS media poll with Richmond (sixth) and Liberty (21st) being among the top 25, while 2010 Chanticleer opponents Georgia Southern, Stony Brook, Garner-Webb and VMI each received votes for the preseason poll. Coastal Carolina also made the list, getting one vote.

"I was disappointed with this morning's practice," said head coach David Bennett. "We had a great time Sunday with a team activity away from football, but they - especially the offensive line - came out this morning sluggish. Luckily we rebounded and practiced well tonight but it was easy because it was cooler and in "uppers" only. They have to have the same intensity and up-tempo pace Tuesday in full gear.
"I see a great opportunity with our 2010 schedule and these ranked opponents. If we can get wins against this schedule, we can be in the conference and maybe even the national title mix. It is out there for us, but we have to take it. We are not ready to take it yet, but think we can get there some Sept. 4."
Coastal Carolina is 30-10 all-time at Brooks Stadium, posting perfect home ledgers in 2004, '05 and '09 - including a win over #1 James Madison in 2005.
