Coastal Football Has Second Two-A-Day; 5 of First 8 Ranked
Aug. 13, 2012
CONWAY - Coastal Carolina had its second two-a-day session Monday, with its first coming on Saturday, marking what Head Coach Joe Moglia says is the official start of camp. Also, with kickoff just 19 days away, The Sports Network released its 2012 FCS Top 25 preseason poll.
Five of Coastal’s first eight opponents made the poll, including Furman (45th), Eastern Kentucky (18th), Appalachian State (sixth), Stony Brook (17th) and Liberty (31st).
“We had almost all of this team involved in the second summer session, so we had to wait until classes concluded before having our first two-a-day.” Moglia said. “These days are very important to really get into our playbook and learn our system. Also, it will force us to be mentally tough as well.
“For the first time, including the spring, we had to start a period over today because we began to lose our focus,” Moglia continued. “Part of what will make us successful is our tempo. We will be relentless and hopefully wear down our opponent.”
Prior to the reset, both sides of the ball enjoyed success. Namely, the first play from scrimmage in the seven-on-seven drills, Aramis Hillary connected with DeMario Bennett for a deep touchdown. Not to be out-done, Tre Henderson stepped in front of a pass on the next play and returned it for a score.
“I like the competition we are bringing out in each other,” Moglia said.
As per usual at this time in camp, several nagging injuries have crept their way through the squad as Chris Presley, John Israel, Adrian Sullivan, Travis Small, Marcus Whitener and Quinton Davis have all missed time. Sullivan, suffering a fractured lower leg, is the only one expected to miss significant action at this point.
If there is a silver lining to that list of injuries, running back and wide receiver were two position groups that were considered to have ample depth heading into camp. The setbacks are allowing newcomers Lorenzo Taliaferro and De’Angelo Henderson to acquire extra reps at running back, while Bucky Kennedy has worked some at receiver to fill a need.
