Football Holds First Scrimmage of 2009 Fall

CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina University’s football squad held its first fall scrimmage at Brooks Stadium, Aug. 12, with the defense controlling the majority of the game.

The defensive side limited the offense to just 115 yards on 14 possessions and two scores (one touchdown, one field goal) in the morning scrimmage. The offense only got a first down on one of the first five drives before breaking through on the scoreboard with running back Jeremy Height’s 37-yard touchdown dash. The only other score was a 32-yard field goal by Justin Durham on the next-to-last drive, with the offense just putting 10 points on the board.

Quarterbacks Zach MacDowall and Jamie Childers were held to a combined 6-of-16 for 47 yards, while Height led all rushers with 54 yards and one touchdown on six carries.

The defense forced two fumbles, recovering both, while holding the offense to 3-of-14 on third-down conversions. Linebackers Derrick Frasier and E.J. Brown led the defense with five tackles each. Frasier had four solo shots, including 3.0 sacks for 17 yards of loss. Overall the defense had five sacks and 13 tackles-for-loss in the scrimmage. The Chanticleers continue their fall workouts in preparation for the season opener at Kent State, Thursday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m.
