Football Wraps Up First Week of Practice With First Scrimmage

CONWAY, S.C. -- The Coastal Carolina football squad wrapped up its first week of practice with a scrimmage in Brooks Stadium, Aug. 11.

In a day that the defense had the best of it, limiting the offense to just two touchdowns and four field goals during the controlled scrimmage. The two scores were both touchdown receptions by Jamar Anderson, one on a leaping catch from Ren McKinnon and the other wide open in the right corner from Sean Fortson. Kicker Justin Durham hit 4-of-5 field goal attempts during the scrimmage portion, including a pair from beyond 40 yards. But Head Coach David Bennett still was not overly pleased with the morning's results.

"We've got a lot of work to do on offense," Bennett said. "The guys we are counting on have to get better and do things like break tackles in the open field instead of letting the first tackler bring you down. Our offensive line has to improve and not let people through, but the defense made some plays. Antonio Bellamy made a great play on a ball, grabbing it with one hand to make an interception and then returning it. Others did too. And not to say that there weren't some good plays on offense. Eric O'Neal had a couple of impressive runs. You don't redshirt someone who runs like that. Arthur Sitton made some plays as well, so there were a few highlights. We have two more of these scrimmages, and we definitely need them. I wish we had five more, but we have to keep working hard and improve every practice."

Coastal continues their work on the practice field on Sunday, with the next scrimmage slated for Wednesday morning at 9:30 a.m.
