CONWAY - The past two days have seen a pair of firsts for the 2010 Coastal Carolina football team. On Monday, the squad donned full gear for the first time, while Tuesday saw the team have its first two-a-day practice session.
One thing that remained constant, however, was change. The team schedule has changed every day since the second practice due to heat and rain. Monday's practice was moved to early in the morning, then Tuesday saw the team start even earlier, starting at 6 am for a two-and-a-half hour session. The night session, set for 7 pm, was pushed back one hour. The night session focused mainly on one-on-one drills, seven-on-seven drills and 11-on-11 drills. While the uniform was scaled back, wearing just helmets and shoulder pads, the quick pace kept the intensity high.
"These past two days have been great if you are a football player and love the game," said head coach David Bennett. "We had full pads on, this was real football. The first few days were mostly technique and individual drills, learning our plays and system. The past two days have been mostly about playing and competing."
Earlier in camp, starting quarterback Zach MacDowall was battling some cramps. However, the senior has worked hard and looked sharp the past two days, winning his group's sprints during the morning conditioning after practice.
"The thing about this group is our seniors are being leaders," Bennett said. "We changed up practice to six A.M. and who is the first person in the training room, Eric O'Neal at 4:40 continuing to rehab and giving himself every opportunity to stay healthy this season. Not far behind was Zach (MacDowell) and Marcus Lott."
O'Neal has continued to look sharp with excellent bursts through holes. Also standing out was Trae Long, who made an impressive catch on a "jump-ball" to end Tuesday's double day.
While Coach Bennett praised his seniors, there were two others who caught his eye.
"Adrian Sullivan and Dushawn Davis are playing really hard. It is really nice to see Dushawn do well because he was a last-minute add to the camp roster and, if he keeps going like he is, he can get on the field come game time."
