Football Holds First of Four Fall Scrimmages

CONWAY, S.C. -- In preparation for the 2008 season, The Coastal Carolina University football team conducted the first of four fall scrimmages at Brooks Stadium, Aug. 9.

The Chanticleers ran 95 plays for 378 yards (4.0 yard avg) in the two-hour scrimmage, but struggled to find the end zone from their own end of the field. The longest drive was an 8-play, 73-yard drive, capped off by a 39-yard touchdown pass from William Richardson to Curtis Smiley. The three quarterbacks combined to go 24-for-34 for 241 yards and a touchdown, but the biggest issue for the Coastal Carolina offense was the five fumbles lost in the scrimmage to the Chanticleer defense. The defense recorded five sacks on the morning, but afterwards, Head Coach David Bennett focused on what still needed to be worked on in the next three weeks.

"We've got a long way to go," Bennett commented. "I've never seen us lay the ball down on the ground like that. The defense did a great job until that last drive and then I think they were worn out. But then the offense didn't finish the final drive off after getting to 3rd-and-1 at the 2-yard line and jump offsides and don't get it done. Thank goodness we have three more scrimmages."

Coastal Carolina returns to the practice field Sunday, Aug. 10 at 3:30 p.m.
