CONWAY - After being ranked sixth nationally by the FCS coaches earlier this week, the Coastal Carolina football program will start the 2014 season ranked seventh by the national media as The Sports Network released its preseason poll today.
This is the first time in program history Coastal Carolina's football program will start the season as a consensus top 10 pick. The Chanticleers finished last season ranked seventh in both the coaches and media polls. This is the fourth time that the Chanticleers enter a season among the nation's top 25. In 2006, CCU was 18th in the coaches poll and 25th by the media. In 2007, Coastal started the year ranked 20th by the coaches and 23rd by the media. This past season, the Chants were ranked 21st in the coaches preseason poll and 25th by the media.
Eastern Washington is the preseason #1 team in the media poll, receiving 82 first place votes, and beat out three-time defending national champion North Dakota State for the top spot. The Bison received 62 first place votes and were the preseason favorite in the coaches poll. Southeastern Louisiana is ranked third, followed by New Hampshire, Montana, Jacksonville State and Coastal.
In all, six of Coastal Carolina's 2014 12 opponents appear in the media preseason poll, including #18 Furman, #27 Liberty, #28 South Carolina State, #36 Charleston Southern, #41 Gardner-Webb and #45 North Carolina A&T.
Coastal Carolina opens the 2014 season August 30 at The Citadel with kickoff set for 6 pm at Johnson Hagood stadium. The Chanticleers will play their home opener on Sept. 13 when #28 South Carolina State comes to Brooks Stadium as part of the University's Family Weekend. Kickoff is set for 6 pm.
Coastal Carolina Football to Host Ladies Huddle August 18
The Coastal Carolina University football program is set to host its annual "Ladies Huddle" on Monday, Aug. 18. The event begins at 6:15 p.m. with registration and cocktails (heavy hors d'oeuvres and beverages) until 6:30 p.m. on the third floor of Adkins Field House. Head coach Joe Moglia will then open the event by welcoming the group and explaining the evening's format.
"Ladies Night" is intended to introduce aspects of football which include, but are not limited to, positions and positioning, fundamentals and other finer points of the game. Attendees will also be provided with an `insider's look' at both the game and the Chanticleer program. Tickets are $20 for current season ticket holders and $25 for non-season ticket holders. Football Season Ticket Pick-up & 1st Chanticleer Call-In is Aug. 25
Coastal Carolina fans that purchased 2014 football season tickets can are invited to Buffalo Wild Wings (Carolina Forest) on August 25 from 4-7 pm to both pick-up there packages as well as receive their complimentary replica championship rings.
Buffalo Wild Wings will have specially-priced appetizers for CCU fans in attendance and fans are encouraged to stay for the seasons's first Chanticleer Call-In show, which airs from 6-7 pm, with head coach Joe Moglia and host Aaron Marks. Fans can also see Coastal's Big South Championship trophies, this year's Sasser Cup trophy and interact with CCU fall sports coaches.
