CONWAY - Coastal Carolina's football team practiced in full gear for the first time Monday, marking the fifth of 29 preseason practices in preparation for the 2012 season that begins Sept. 1 versus North Carolina A&T at 6 pm.
The session was cut short by about 10 minutes due to lightning in the area. However, with inclement weather threatening, the team stayed dry and, despite a muggy afternoon, the temperatures dropped with the impending rain.
While the team was in full pads, the practices were similar to the first four in terms of contact. Most of the contact was done in individual drills, working on technique. However, the offensive and defensive linemen did ramp up the point of attack hitting during several periods of the session.
Despite the favorable breaks, first year head coach Joe Mogliawas not pleased with Monday's session.
"Frankly, I thought we had better practices the first four days," Moglia said. "I thought we had better tempo and fewer mental mistakes in the days leading up to today."
During seven-on-seven, the offense got off to a quick start when Aramis Hillary connected with Matt Hazel on a well-timed deep out pattern. Later, the defense got a lift when Dontavais Johnson and Mark Singletonpulled down deflected passes for interceptions.
