CONWAY - Coastal Carolina senior linebacker Quinn Backus was tabbed the seventh-best player in the NCAA Division I FCS - and tops among defensive players - by BeyondSportsNetwork.com.
Backus is a two-time All-American, a two-time Big South Defensive Player of the Year and finished seventh in last year's voting for the Buck Buchanan Award, which annually goes to the top defensive player in the FCS.
BeyondSportsNetwork.com, which ranked 20 players to watch this season, listed Backus was its favorite to win the Buck Buchanan Award this season and said, "His height (5'10) could be the only thing holding him back from being one of the most dominant defensive players the FCS has ever seen."
Backus enters 2014 as the active NCAA Division I FCS leader in both tackles (314) and solo tackles (172). He has led the Big South in tackles in each of the last two seasons. For his career, Backus has tallied 20.0 tackles for losses, six interceptions, 10 pass break-ups, three forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and scored two touchdowns.
