The Sports Network Buck Buchanan Award Watch List Press Release

CONWAY - Coastal Carolina senior linebacker Quinn Backus was named to the initial Buck Buchanan Award Watch List. The Buck Buchanan Award is presented annually by The Sports Network and given to the top defensive player in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).

Backus finished seventh in the 2013 Buck Buchanan Award voting last season and is the top returning vote getter. Others to receive votes last year and appear on this year's initial Watch List include Lynden Trail (Norfolk State), Davis Tull (UT Chattanooga), Caleb Schaffitzel (Missouri State) and Ronnie Hamlin (Eastern Washington).

Backus, a 2014 preseason first team All-American, was named All-American and Big South Defensive Player of the Year in both 2012 and 2013. He starts 2014 as the NCAA FCS active leader in both career total tackles (314) and career solo tackles (172).

Backus is a two-time tackles leader in the Big South. This past season, he set the CCU and tied the Big South single-season records with 144 total tackles, including 10.5 tackles for loss, and established school and league single-season marks with 85 solo tackles. He scored two touchdowns in 2013, returning a blocked field goal a CCU-record 56 yards for a score at South Carolina State and returning an interception a CCU-record 73 yards for a score versus Gardner-Webb. Backus tallied a total four interceptions and set a CCU record with 127 interception return yards, which ranks second on the Big South single-season record.

Through three seasons, Backus has additionally amassed 20 tackles for loss, 10 pass break ups, six interceptions, four sacks, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.

Earlier this week, Coastal Carolina junior quarterback Alex Ross was named to the initial Walter Payton Award Watch List, which honors the most outstanding player in the FCS.
