Catron Gets Two Honors; Backus, Hamilton and Ross Honored As Well

CONWAY - Coastal Carolina senior Alex Catron received a pair of honors as he was named to the 2014 College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) FCS Placekicker of the Year Watch List and named first team preseason All-American by BeyondSportsNetwork.com.
Also making the BeyondSportsNetwork.com preseason All-American team were linebacker Quinn Backus (first team), offensive lineman Chad Hamilton (first team) and quarterback Alex Ross (third team). Previously, Backus (first team) and Hamilton (second team) were named to The Sports Network preseason All-American team while Ross was named to the Walter Payton Award Watch List.
Catron was tabbed first team All-Big South last season as he led the league kickers in scoring (6.0 points per game) and his 90 points scored ranked him third on CCU's single-season list. He connected on 60-of-63 extra points and 10-of-13 field goals, setting a CCU record with his 76.9 field goal percentage.
Key makes by Catron in 2013 include a school-record 50-yard field goal at Charleston Southern, a 48-yarder at Liberty, a 46-yarder at South Carolina and a 35-yarder in double overtime at Liberty, which proved to be the game winner.
Also, Catron, who made eight tackles on coverage, helped CCU lead the Big South and rank 16th nationally in kick return defense, holding opponents to 17.73 yards per return.
For his career, Catron has made 106-of-111 extra points and 19-of-25 field goals, with his field goal percentage of .760 establishing a CCU career record.
