CONWAY, S.C. -- Tight end Rodney Burgess became the third Coastal Carolina football player to join a National Football League squad this year, signing an undrafted free agent contract with the Detroit Lions this morning (May 3). He will join the Lions for their Rookie Mini-Camp this weekend, May 4-6.
A four-year letterwinner for the Chanticleers, Burgess helped CCU to a 34-11 mark, three consecutive Big South Conference titles and the programs first-ever berth in the NCAA Division I Playoffs in just its fourth year of play. He currently ranks on Coastals career top-10 list in receptions (3rd, 52), receiving yards (4th, 701), touchdowns (t-4th, 3) and yards per catch (7th, 13.48). Last season, Burgess earned First Team All-Big South honors at the tight end position after playing in all 12 games (five as a starter) and posting 18 catches for a career-best 300 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He had a season-high four catches against Elon and at Wofford, including 85 yards and one touchdown against the Terriers as part of the dramatic come-from-behind win.
