CONWAY - The 2013 Coastal Carolina football had its first public viewing on Saturday as it played its annual Teal-Black Spring Game at Brooks Stadium.

The team racked up 575 yards of total offense including 235 yards on the ground and 340 yards through the air. The receivers accounted for six of CCU's nine touchdowns while the running backs rushed for four scores and quarterback Alex Ross scrambled for a 40-yard TD. Rising senior Matt Hazel had the biggest impact on the scoreboard as he scored three touchdowns on three catches for a total of 83 yards.

Reigning Big South Coach of the Year Joe Moglia opened the day addressing the crowd to explain the format of the day. In addition, Moglia gave the 1,205 fans in attendance a rundown of the Chanticleers' schedule on both gamedays and practices.

Following 20 minutes of warm-ups and individual position drills the team came together to start the scrimmage. The kickoff unit was the first to take the field. Alex Catron sent the boot to the four-yard line where it was taken by Max Elliot out to the eight. Michael Church led the second team offense onto the field against Quinn Backus and the first team defense. The defense held firm and quickly forced a three-and-out.

Following a punt, Alex Ross and the first team offense took the field against the second team defense. Ross took the second snap of the series 40 yards to paydirt on a designed run to the right.

It was then Dalton Demos' turn to lead the second offensive unit against the first defense. Demos found a quick connection with Devon Brown for a 35-yard pickup. Two plays later Demos hit redshirt freshman Bruce Mapp in stride for a 35-yard touchdown.

The first team offense then returned to the field against the second team defense. The drive ended with Matt Hazel finding the end zone on a 30-yard screen. The eight play drive was moved along nicely by 12-yard reception by DeMario Bennett and 14-yard run by De'Angelo Henderson.

The first team defense then forced a punt after giving up a modest 21 yards to the second team offense.

Ross returned to the field with the first offensive unit for series against the second defensive unit with the drive starting on the offense's 40-yard line. Ross and Henderson combined to pick up a first down on the ground. Henderson then pickup up 14 yards on the next play after making a defensive player miss in the hole. Hazel capped the drive with his second touchdown of the afternoon on a 37-yard reception from Ross.

The first team again forced a three-and-out against the second team offense. Arthur Kelley and Colton Blackburn each picked up sacks of Demos on the series.

The first team offense took the field for a final time against the second defense from the own 45-yard line. Ross found Niccolo Mastromatteo for a 17-yard gain on a quick-hitter across the middle. After three rushes that netted nine yards, Ross again hooked up with Hazel for a touchdown. This time it was an 18-yard pass that was hauled in just inside the pylon.

The "ones" finally met on the field in a five-minute redzone situation. The offense owned the first two series as Ross connected with Mapp for a 10-yard reception then found him again two plays later for a diving five-yard TD. The second series only lasted a single play as Henderson busted through the right side of the line for a 20-yard scamper to the end zone. The defense held its ground over the remainder of the segment, forcing a pair of missed field goal attempts.
