CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University football squad held its annual Teal/Black Game Saturday, April 10 at Brooks Stadium, with the Black squad escaping with a 9-3 victory. The game was played in its usual abbreviated format, with the clock only stopping for timeouts and in normal situations in the final two minutes of each half.
The Teal squad got on the board first after a six-play, 67-yard drive in the first quarter. The drive got down to the Black 5-yard line, but couldn't get in the end zone. From there, kicker Justin Durham hit from 22 yards out to make it 3-0 Teal.
The Black team answered with a field goal of its own late in the half, also ending a long nine-play, 86-yard march. Punter Ben Erdman handled the chores, hitting from 30 yards out with 19 seconds to play in the half, tying the game at three going into the halftime locker room.
The game-winning score happened midway through the third, as the Black team found the end zone for the only touchdown of the day. On a second-and-goal play from the Teal 4, quarterback Jamie Childers found tight end Myron Rogers open in the end zone for the score. The extra point was blocked, making it 9-3 Black with 6:58 to go in the third. From there, neither team was able to get on the others' half of the field until a late interception by Brian Harrison sealed the win for the Black team.
The two teams were fairly even on the total yardage, with Teal having a slight edge 165-153. Teal quarterback Zach MacDowall was 11-for-24 for 146 yards and one interception, while Black quarterback Jamie Childers was 8-for-16 for 110 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Tight end Akeem Wesley and running back Jeremy Height each had four receptions for the Teal team, while Chris Presley led the Teal team with game-high 72 yards on three catches.
