CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina football team went through a two-hour controlled scrimmage Saturday afternoon inside Brooks Stadium. The offense scored four touchdowns including two through the air while the defense came up with three sacks, three tackles for loss and a fumble recovery. The team worked on all aspects of the game including special teams.
The scrimmage started with the team breaking into their positions for 10 minutes of position specific drills and warm-ups. Live action began in the next session with the punt unit taking the field for eight plays of situational punting.
The one offensive and defensive units then took the field for 10 plays with the offense holding the ball at their own 30-yard line. The offense, led by Michael Church (Alex Ross was held out of the scrimmage for precautionary reasons), quickly moved the ball down the field through the air. The seven-play scoring drive was capped by a 10-yard Lorenzo Taliaferro touchdown run. The defense controlled the final three plays, forcing minimal yardage on two running plays and a swing pass.
The twos then took the field for 10 plays. The second defensive unit flexed its collective muscle, forcing the offense to lose yardage on consecutive plays, while also picking up a sack of Dalton Demos. The bright spot for the second offensive unit came in the form of a De'Angelo Henderson 11-yard scamper on his third carry.
The punt return team then had their time on the field. Lorenzo Boyles made the most of the session, cleanly blocking a punt and recovering the loose ball. Boyles then nearly blocked the final punt of the segment, missing the ball by mere inches.
The offense and defense returned to the field for critical third-down scenarios. The first team defense impressed during the series, holding the top offensive unit at bay for five of the six plays. The second team offense took advantage of the ground game against the No. 2 defense, converting four of their six plays. Henderson opened the second team's plays with a 10-yard run followed by a 28-yard burst on the second play from scrimmage.
The defense dominated the next segment of practice as neither offense was able to sustain a drive from the 50-yard line. The scrimmage then moved to the field goal segment of the kicking game.
The offense vs. defense then went into the red zone with the offense facing a third down. The first team offense produced scores by way of a six-yard Church scramble to the pylon and a 20-yard Church to Niccolo Mastromatteo hookup. The second team found paydirt with Demos connecting with Devin Brown for a 13-yard strike.
The scrimmage concluded with the respective offensive units attempting to move the ball downfield from their own 30-yard line. The first team defense stood strong and forced a 3-and-out, while the second team offense moved the ball down to the 25 before its drive stalled.
