Football Announces 2005 Schedule

Chants to have five games at home, including defending national champion

CONWAY, S.C. - Coastal Carolina will play five games at Brooks Stadium in its third season of play, as the Chanticleers’ 2005 football schedule was announced today (March 15). The Chants welcome back 19 starters on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball from a team that finished 10-1 and a perfect 4-0 in the Big South Conference in 2004.

Coastal, who finished the 2004 season ranked in the top 25 in three major polls, opens the 2005 season on the road against Southern Conference foe Elon, Sept. 3. The following game, the Chanticleers will open the home slate with its toughest test of its young program, welcoming defending national champion James Madison to Conway, Sept. 10. CCU will then face another SoCon team, heading to Boone, NC to take on Appalachian State, Sept. 17.

After hosting Delaware State, Sept. 24, the Chants head to Orangeburg to take on another top-25 program in South Carolina State, Oct. 1. CCU will then open defense of its Big South title, hosting Gardner-Webb, Oct. 15. Coastal then travels to Liberty, Oct. 22 before hosting VMI, Oct. 29, for Homecoming on the Conway campus. CCU will then wrap up the 2005 schedule at Savannah State, Nov. 5, hosting Mansfield (PA), Nov. 12, and then the in-state finale at Big South Conference rival Charleston Southern, Nov. 19.

"What a great challenge for our program," CCU head coach David Bennett said. "I know the players, coaches, alumni and all the members of the Coastal football family will be excited about this one. But we are going to find out where we are nationally as a program real quick. Opening at a Southern Conference school like Elon will be a challenge. Then we return home to host the defending national champions in James Madison, who will return 16 starters. App State is 11-0 in the last two years at home, while Delaware State beat Hampton last year. Then we go to South Carolina State, who were the co-champions in the MEAC last year. Then we get into the Big South schedule with Gardner-Webb and Liberty, so this is definitely going to be a challenging schedule for us this season."

Season tickets for CCU’s 2005 football season will go on sale April 1 and can be purchased over the phone by calling 843-347-TIXX or 1-877-4CHANTS. Coastal Carolina University’s complete 2005 football schedule follows.
